Over the next three afternoons, Tess got a taste of what she imagined heaven must be like, and she was finding the experience to be utterly delectable. From three o‘clock until six o’clock, she discovered what it meant to be a mom. Feelings blossomed inside her—maternal feelings she’d never experienced before coming home to Pine Meadow, before meeting her adorable, fun-loving, outgoing daughter. Feelings that were warm and fuzzy and...completely indescribable. If some scientist could isolate whatever chemical the brain secreted that conjured these complicated feelings—this joyous euphoria, this giddy pleasure, this intense pride—and bottle the stuff, he’d become a millionaire overnight.

Erin was intelligent and quick-witted. A joy to be around. And Tess savored those three hours she spent with her daughter every afternoon. Tess would meet Erin at the bus stop and walk with her back to Dylan’s house. Usually Dylan picked up Erin and took her to the shop, but he’d agreed to allow Tess to stay with their daughter until he arrived home from work.

That very first evening, the day that she had gone to school with Dylan to pick up Erin, Tess had stayed and had dinner with the two of them. With disastrous results. The air was so awkward between Tess and Dylan that Erin had picked up on it. Misreading the tense emotions vibrating in the air as anger, Erin had asked why her parents were upset with each other. Dylan had done his best to calm her fears, but if it hadn’t been for Erin’s endless chatter, the meal would have been eaten in total silence.

Tess tried to snuff out the electricity that pulsed between her and Dylan, but she failed. Miserably. She knew they needed to talk about what was happening to them. And she was certain that once they did, once they. acknowledged these echoes from their past attraction—at least that’s how she described what she was feeling for Dylan—then they could both put all this silliness behind them. However, a private talk with Dylan was next to impossible with Erin at Tess’s elbow every moment. So after that first evening, Tess avoided further awkwardness, making sure she came up with some excuse, and left the house as soon as Dylan arrived home from work around six-fifteen. But getting their feelings out in the open was inevitable.

However this Friday afternoon, Tess found herself driving down a lonely road rather than spending a few delightful hours with her daughter. Seems that Erin had to get together with Toby to work on their history project, the replica of King Tut’s death mask. Although Erin was disappointed that she and Tess wouldn’t have the afternoon together, Tess had also heard an underlying excitement in her daughter’s voice about the project when the child called to alert her to the change of plans.

Tess slowed to a stop at a crossroads and smiled. Erin had gotten off the subject at hand during their phone conversation. As usual, Tess thought, her grin widening. Erin had told her
